Roles and Responsibilities

The LAG is integral to the LEADER approach.  The main aim of the LAG is to promote and reinforce the value of cooperative and partnership working by bringing together organisations and individuals who have an interest in encouraging and supporting socio-economic development in rural areas. 

  • Set the strategic vision and direction of the Programme

  • Enable a locally led approach to rural development

  • Consider and review the Local Development Strategy

  • Promote and raise awareness and understanding of issues

  • Act as a forum for discussion of major issues affecting rural regeneration across the LAG Area.


Person specification

  • Skills relevant to the Skills & Strategy matrix, to enable effective programme delivery

  • Knowledge relevant to the Skills & Strategy matrix, to enable effective programme delivery

  • Capacity to commit to the 7 LEADER principles below;

    • Area Based Approach

    • Partnership approach

    • Bottom up approach to development

    • Integrated & multi sectoral approach

    •  Innovation/experimentation

    • Co-operation

    • Networking at regional, national and EU-level

The LAG will meet at least 4 times a year, in a central location.  There will be an amount of preparation and reading for each member prior to a LAG meeting.  By putting yourself forward to be considered for LAG membership you are indicating that you have the capacity to take on this role.


Decision Making Board (DMB) Members Job Description

The DMB will be made up from members of the LAG and is primarily responsible for approving applications for LEADER funding by applying criteria agreed by the LAG.

  • Commissioning Programme projects,

  • Monitoring and reviewing the progress of projects to meet agreed outputs/expenditure and:

  • Preparing an Local Development Strategy and an Annual Report for consideration by the LAG

  • The role of the DMB is to take prompt decisions on project applications, monitor the operation of approved projects and to function as a discussion group to develop the Local Development Strategy for consideration by the LAG.

The responsibilities of a member of the DMB are in addition to those of a LAG member.  The Decision Making Body will meet at least every quarter and will be required to make decisions outside of this if necessary.  There will be substantial reading and preparation prior to each panel and you must be prepared to be accountable for the decision of the panel.
